Our club is having difficulty locating a venue that will allow chess players under the age of 18 unless we carry sexual misconduct/molestation coverage in addition to our general liability coverage. This is a requirement for “Adult” tournaments where minors are allowed to play. RV Nuccio (the US Chess partner) does not provide it, and when I inquired with insurers, I heard prices around $7,000/year.
Is anyone aware of how a small nonprofit can find this more affordably?
I find that rather surprising. As you are surely aware, I am holding the Texas Action Championship at the Waco Convention Center this Saturday (we have 98 players registered so far). This event will have both children and adults but the Convention Center never asked for that kind of insurance. All they asked for is customary liability insurance, which for on a per event basis cost about $200.
I have passed this note along to the ED, but I don’t think we’ve had any national event venues ask for this kind of coverage.
I will note that one venue that started asking us (local organizers) for insurance coverage was really just trying to tell us to ‘go away’.
