Square Of The Pawn

Greetings,

Do you feel like your endgame studies will never get used?

Well, don’t fret. Eventually, it will pay off. I finally got to use the square of the pawn principle in a rated game against Anthony Telinbacco and talk about it in this week’s newsletter.

In addition, Tim Brennan posted an interview he does with me on his new website. You can read about it and find the links in the newsletter too.

Peace be with you,

Paul Anderson

I play quite often on FICS, and use the square of the pawn rule on a fairly regular basis.

What I find to be a more rare occasion, is triangulating the king to win an endgame.

Of course, 99pct of my games are g/10… which is a fairly fast time compared to slower tournament games.

couldn’t figure out one time in a skittles game why this “square of the pawn” hadn’t worked for me. Of course it was because my opponent had pushed his pawn from c4 to c6 in one move!

Playing a lot of quick games would get you more endgames, but I would still think it is a small percentage of those games.

The thing I liked about my game was that I knew I could move away from the pawn before going after it to get the win.

Of course, triangulation is much rarer.

This is the game, actually just played quite recently:

Specifically, moves 39, 40, and 41 is the point where I triangulated my king.
Pretty nice game, considering the time control. Opponent resigned at the end. Not sure if the .pgn file properly shows that. -It may be that the opponent left the game (in which I was defaulted the win by the server.)

Edit: That’s weird, the date shows May 25th… and I know I played it several days ago. Must be on account of my cutting and pasting the game on May 25th.
