Territories

When I search for tournaments, the District of Columbia is one of the choices under “state”, but are there any USCF members or tournaments in any other U.S. territories?

I’d imagine Puerto Rico, but territories are technically a different country, so they might use a different national rating system, or maybe even use FIDE.

All other territories are so small, its highly doubtful they’d have any but the most basic local tournaments, if any at all.

Puerto Rico is the only one I’ve actually seen in a tournament, but just looking on MSA, I see GU (Guam), VI (Virgin Islands), and a couple for MP, which I’m not sure what that is, maybe Mariana Islands?

I did not find any affiliates for any of the territories, even Puerto Rico. The only affiliate on the website that I see is the US Panzer Chess Club which is actually for APO (military), which also has no tournaments rated.

Puerto Rico, Guam, and Virgin Islands all have FIDE affiliation. Puerto Rico has 8 active players rated over 2200 FIDE, including one IM, and has several FIDE-rated tournaments a month.

There have been USCF rated tournaments in Guam, American Samoa and the US Virgin Islands, but not recently.

I don’t think the US Virgin Islands are considered a separate national federation by FIDE, though the British Virgin Islands is. Puerto Rico is also a separate FIDE national federation.

The US Virgin Islands is a member of FIDE

They fielded a team for the 40th Chess Olympiad in 2012, finishing 145th out of 157 teams.

OK, I stand corrected. Thanks.
