The Special Referee

in the TD Support area there is a list of “Special Referees” which you can use.

Has anyone used one of those for a tournament? Is so how if you don’t mind sharing.

I think the idea is potentially very helpful to a TD.

As one of those listed, I think I’ve been called about 3 times in the 10+ years my name has been there and in one of those cases, I wasn’t home so the caller didn’t leave a call back number.

It’s been a few years since I got one of those calls. If I recall correctly, in both cases in which I spoke to the TD, the issue was similar to ones I’d faced in the past and I explained what I did. It has been too long to remember the specifics.

The calls have been fewer since the list of referees is no longer published in the paper supplements; however, I still get about one call a year. In fact I got one just a few weeks ago regarding a pairing (two kids, twins, from the same school were the only 3-0s. Should they be paired?).

Said event prompted me to print out the list of special referees and keep it with my rules revision document. We couldn’t find the list quickly via the website and ended up Googling Tim to get his number.

The current list is here, for anyone looking for it in a hurry. ( main.uschess.org/docs/gov/report … e-2007.php ) There’s also a link in TD/A - but I was scrabbling all around the main website.

IIRC, coloring the decision was that they had been paired together in Round 2 when they were both 2-0, and a decision had already been made on the floor to override that round’s pairing. (I wasn’t on that section, but running the computer in another section, so I could be misremembering.)

I sure could have used that list on 2/6! I’ve printed a PDF to my special chess folder on the computer for future reference.

Currently I seem to be the “keeper” of that list. So, what is the down side of publishing it on the Forums occasionally? My goal is to make sure that the info is out there while also keeping the phone numbers of the special referees from being used by the Net scumbags.
