The TD Show

Rather than start a separate thread for each “The TD Show” episode, I figured I would just have this one where we can make announcements about upcoming shows and gather feedback on things you would like to see included.

This week’s topic will be “Illegal Moves” and will air at 9pm Eastern/6pm Pacific on Thursday, May 7 on the US Chess Twitch channel at twitch.tv/uschess. Our special guest will be NTD Ken Ballou, Chair of the US Chess Rules Committee.

We will discuss illegal moves, predominantly Chapter 1, Section 11 of the US Chess Rules, when TDs should and should not get involved in claiming them, and what the actions to take and applicable penalties are. We’ll also touch on the slight wording revision to Rule 11D that came into effect on January 1, 2020.

Is there any way to view this video after the fact? I tried the link, and it crashed my computer. I couldn’t even reboot. I had to power off and back on.

All episodes will be added to the US Chess YouTube Channel and we’ve created a Playlist called “TD Videos” for this and other useful videos at youtube.com/watch?v=j4NXnlH … 5EaWOHWBvn

Hope to see you all there!

I’ve moved most of the discussion from this topic into two new ones: Rule 11, Illegal Moves and Minimum base time.

This week’s “The TD Show” topic will be “Starting Games: The Clock” and will air at 9pm Eastern/6pm Pacific on Thursday, June 11 on the US Chess Twitch channel at twitch.tv/uschess.

This week’s guest will be NTD Bob Messenger and we will discuss the various rules surrounding setting your clock at the beginning of the game such as which type of clock takes priority, who gets to choose which clock is used and where to put it, what do you do if one or both players are late and how does this affect the previous issues and who is responsible for setting the clock. Please note that we will not actually be setting clocks and running through how to set the various models!

This week’s guest will be NTD Harold Stenzel and we will discuss the various rules surrounding touch move, what does touch move mean, when can a claim be made, how do you handle such claims, how do you determine touch move versus accidental piece touches and any special rules for castling and pawn promotion.

Are suggestions allowed here? :unamused:

We need a show (perhaps lengthier; i.e., 1 hour) with a tutorial on using pairing software. Perhaps Tom Doan (or Tim Just) would like to lead off with something on WinTD??

PS) Also, maybe Tom could reply to my support message sometime?

Hi Terry,

I know SwissSys has some tutorial videos on its website regarding use and Tim Just has done some YouTube videos on WinTD, just search YouTube for WinTD and some will populate. I’m not sure using a 3rd party software is best done by US Chess, this should be something the software itself should be interested in doing for its users.

This week’s “The TD Show” topic will be “Non-Monetary Tie-Breaks” and will air at 9pm Eastern/6pm Pacific on Thursday, June 18 on the US Chess Twitch channel at twitch.tv/uschess.

This week’s guest will be NTD Enrique Huerta and we will provide a quick overview of the main individual Swiss non-monetary tie-break methods, Modified Median (including Median), Solkoff, Cumulative and Cumulative Scores of Opposition. We’ll provide you with the details on how to calculate these tie-breaks and show some examples of them in use.

This week’s “The TD Show” topic will be “Determination and Completion of Moves” and will air at 9pm Eastern/6pm Pacific on Thursday, July 2 on the US Chess Twitch channel at twitch.tv/uschess.

This week’s guest will be ANTD Steve Lampkin and we will provide an overview of the rules relating to determination and completion of moves, why it is important to know the difference and what can happen in this phase between determining and completing a move.

This week’s “The TD Show” topic will be “Scoresheets” and will air at 9pm Eastern/6pm Pacific on Thursday, July 16 on the US Chess Twitch channel at twitch.tv/uschess.

This week’s guest will be ANTD Alan Hodge and we will provide an overview of the rules relating to scoresheets such as how and when the players need to keep score in a game and when they can and cannot be used to validate claims.

Is there a “The TD Show” episode tonight? I confess to having been distracted by town halls to prepare for the recent special delegates’ meeting, so I’ve lost track.

https://new.uschess.org/news/td-show-episode-17-chapter-10-rules-online-tournaments-and-matches lists an episode for tonight (August 20th, 9 p.m. Eastern/6 p.m. Pacific Time)
