Hey Everyone!!! I know everyone has to have some response to this…
The USCF is moving to Tennessee soon and I see the financal problem to become worse!!! I think the problem here is that the USCF needs to be ran by more than just chess players. (or at least the people making the desicions) I think the problem is none of the people on the USCF Executive Board are business people and they are making the decision to move some people they don't know down to Tennessee!!! (I forgot to mention that the same thing is occuring in other chess associations and organizations!!! Theyre are no business people that play chess running things like they should be!!!) There was another proposal on the table that looked like it would work but the turn it down because they are mindset to move down there!!! :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation: To me it seems like they will become bankrupt in just a short while after they move down there :exclamation:   :frowning: By the way, the USCF server for the web site is not in the USCF office? (No wonder it takes so long) :frowning: :frowning:
What are your thoughts? ( I know I am just a teenager, but I am also a very analytic chess player and I have that gift and I see disastor coming after the move! I know this is a controversal topic nolan but plez dont take this post down!!! )
Michael:
The times have changed, the large office space in New Windsor did a great job for its era. I do hate seeing the office moved from one state to the other, as the people in the office have been with the federation for years. Not sure how many people will move from New York to Tennessee, as its’ a huge shift to move with you’re job.
Companies have been pulling out of New York state for years, the taxes (state and local) can kill any company. Tennessee is a very low tax state, its’ one of the few states that does not have a state income tax, and one of the few that does not require car insurance.
The other factor, tournaments the larger tournaments are not always in New York state. Its’ not like the 1950’s or even up to the 1970’s, when the large east coast tournaments had to be in New York. With the federation going after the larger scholastic tournaments (Supernational III), or the other larger scholastic events. It has become more clear the office would be best in that state.
As down size the office has become, it does not matter what state or what location the office has to be. The office only has to hold the workers, there is no warehouse. Only have to take care of the minor paperwork, as everything has gone online. The office can work just as well in Alaska or Hawaii or even Florida. Since the supernationals are always going to be in Tennessee, that is only a 45 minute drive from the tournament to the new office.
Tennesse has an 8 1/4 % sales tax (last time I was there)
But USCF can’t get much worse. If they see a profitable way, that’s fine.
Obviously if they’re in financial trouble they have to stay afloat. No players will continue paying $50/yr for a product they don’t find worthy.
Personally, I’m waiting for stability before I ship off my $1000 for a lifetime membership.
