Wayne Clark

We should note one of Wayne’s contributions to chess, #1v#2 pairings. While he may not be the only person to promote this, he rigorously adopted it for his chess club events.

There may be good reasons not to follow this suggestion. But if no one has any, I hope the chess community will denote this as the Clark method or Clark pairings.

I have a lot of respect for Wayne but 1 vs 2 pairings have been around for a long time. I know that my club was using them for its ladder before Wayne became a SrTD (probably before he became a CTD - he skipped over LTD) and it was in the rulebook for quite some time before my club started using them (Kevin Schmuggerow was the one to suggest the club switch to using them).

I admired the patience Wayne showed for people who did not understand the rules and how calm he could be enlightening such people. I appreciated his sense of humor and his dedication towards doing the best job any TD could reasonably expect to do. His book with Tim is one that any TD can glean some tips from.

But I don’t think that renaming 1 vs 2 as the Clark method is reasonable. He wasn’t a driving force for such pairings (unlike Ruth Haring who was a very visible force for the tournament now named for her). Wayne worked so hard for so many different tournaments that it is hard to find one that it would be appropriate to name after him, but that might be a good way of memorializing him.

To clarify, I didn’t say he created 1 v 2 or that he was among the first to use it. I would say that he was a driving force behind it, on the club level, which is why I raised it. Given his significant work there, and the impact he had with TMS providers (at least, this was always the impression I had since I know he reached out and spoke to several about it) I thought it worthwhile.

Again, it may not be a good idea. But I wanted to clarify that he did, in fact, drive it.
