WINTD-Pairing Teammates

I’ve got a tournament set to not pair teammates. The options are: Yes, No, Only if Necessary. I’ve selected NO, but the final round pairs teammates anyway on top board.

My only question is why does it do this when the option isn’t set to “Only if Necessary.”

I understand, and agree, that in the final round, the rule should be set to override, but in this particular case it isn’t, but pairs them anyway.

Here’s the Pairing Logic:

Pairing Section k12, Round 5, on Thu Sep 15 16:48:18 2016

Options Used:
High (Equalize) Limit=200
Low (Alternate) Limit=80
Teammates Not Paired

It probably has to really dip down into the low score groups to find opponents for all those 4.0’s. Did you put a limit on the drop size? If you did, then it probably can’t pair the section without violating that and the drop size limit takes precedence. If you didn’t limit the drop size you probably need a much higher effort level.

IT was too large of a rating difference so the teammates remain paired. You would have to change the limit setting to avoid that - or let it pair and then change the pairing manually if you really wanted to avoid the teammate pairing.

Actually, that’s not correct. The teammate restriction (if it’s set to “No”, not “Only if Necessary”) in theory overrides everything else except not repeating pairings. In this case, it’s obviously quite difficult to come up with a pairing that avoids teammates at some level. The top score group is all from one team, and the bottom ones are mainly just from a couple so even in the bottom scoregroups, many players will have largely run out of opponents in nearby scoregroups. If getting pairings for the 4.0’s produces a teammate pairing at the bottom, it will prefer making the teammate pairing at the top instead.

(This is probably an ideal situation for “Pair Teammates at or Above…”).

Or for getting more players from more teams. When you have too many players representing too few teams you’re apt to run into situations like this.

Well you would certainly know how your program works!!
