WOO YU!!

Congratulations to new US Women’s Champion Jennifer Yu.

What a performance!

Wow, she came darned close to that perfect Fischer thingey!

Indeed she did. Outstanding performance

Jennifer continues to show excellent problem solving ability at the board. She has that innate quality of looking at each position, after each move, anew. I suspect that her overall theoretical knowledge is lagging relative to the rest of her game – she does much better in a 1-round-a-day RR, when she can prepare for a specific player, and she really exceled in the 2017 World Team and 2018 Olympiad, where she had a team coach to help her prepare.

She has acheived all 3 of her IM Norms, and is now just 31 points shy of 2400 ELO and the IM title. (Trivia question: Jennifer would be just the third female born in the USA to achieve the IM title. Who are the first two?)

I was heartened to hear that she is now considering a “gap year” (after HS graduation in June 2020) to see how far she can progress in chess. She seems to love the game (of course, who wouldn’t after a 10/11 result!) and has the ability to raise the bar.
