Our participants include:
IM Kirill Kuderinov (KAZ)
IM Angelo Young (PHI)
IM Emory Tate (USA)
IM-elect (FM) Mehmed Pasalic (GER) - scored all 3 norms at this tournament series!
FM Florin Felecan (USA) - holds 1 IM norm
FM Aleksander Stamnov (MKD)
FM Jim Dean (USA)
FM Albert Chow (USA)
WFM Yuanling Yuan (CAN)
NM (non-FIDE title) Marc Arnold (USA) - scored his 1st IM norm at this tournament in March!
IM norm is 6.5/9; WGM is 5.5/9; WIM is 4/9
All games will be broadcast live on the MonRoi World Databank of Chess!
Will Marc Arnold score his second norm? Will someone who hasn’t scored a norm at this tournament series lock one in? Tune in to find out.
Let’s also extend congrats to IM-elect Mehmed Pasalic (GER) who is awaiting the award of his IM title. His application has been submitted by the German federation and it’s just a waiting game now. Soon you’ll be able to see him as one of the IM’s in this tournament series!
It was a wild Saturday when we kicked off the 12th NA FIDE Invitational being hosted once again by IM Angelo Young at the Touch Move Chess Center.
FM Florin Felecan, who graciously played as a last minute replacement, has shot out of the gate and left IM-elect Mehmed Pasalic and top seed IM Kirill Kuderinov in the dust. Florin is 2/2 and needs 4.5 out of 7 to secure his second IM norm.
Another last minute replacement is Chicago local FM Albert Chow. Albert so far has drawn with Angelo and won against Stamnov. He needs 5/7 to secure his first IM norm. A long and difficult road awaits him but his words were - ‘these will all be fighting games by me’.
WFM Yuanling Yuan is the lowest rated seed in this event but so far she’s on track for at least her WIM norm. She currently holds a 20-round WIM norm and a single 9-round WIM norm will secure her title. She’ll only then have to pass the 2200 rating barrier to make her into a full WIM!
Finally we have NY native, FM-elect Marc Arnold, playing in his second IM norm tournament with us. He scored his first IM norm tournament in March 2008 and is enroute to his second one. He took out IM Emory Tate in the first round and drew with Angelo in the second. 5/7 will secure his 2nd IM norm.

Why does Chow need 5/7 for an IM norm but Felecan only needs 4.5/7? Is it because Chow has a higher FIDE rating (so the average of his opponents’ ratings is lower)?
Chow is 1.5/2 right now. The norm is 6.5/9 so since there are 7 rounds left and he needs 5 points to make the 6.5 he would need 5/7 from the remaining rounds.
Felecan is 2/2 right now. Norm again is 6.5/9 so same logic.
Also Chow is 2198 FIDE while Felecan is 2377. So Felecan has the higher rating, not Chow.
One of the things that I do is ensure that all players will have the same IM norm requirement which is generally 6.5/9. 6/9 would require having a very high rated player (or 2) in there (like Ben Finegold) but then taking the 1/2 point from a Finegold-caliber player (who is really a GM waiting for the last norm) is hard. Going 7/9 is tough as a bad draw will ruin chances.
Hopefully this explains things.
Thanks, I didn’t understand that it was points from the remaining games.
