It appears that Relyea Chess is no longer running tournaments, with the exception of the 2020 U.S. Blind Chess Championship in July.
I need to play two more opponents in a FIDE rated event to get my FIDE rating. Alex’s FIDE rated tournaments were a blessing in this regard. The only options I’ve found near enough to travel to are Bill Goitchbergs events. Even if I were able to play given the rating restrictions in play, the enty fee would be $460 as opposed to Alex’s $55 or thereabouts. Does anyone know of a tournament coming up that is more like what Alex was running?
Lots of medium-to-large tournaments in the Chicago area have FIDE-rated sections at the top, which are usually (but not always) open to all (no lower bound on an entrant’s rating). They typically have entry fees of about $100 or $150.
Thanks. I’ll keep that in mind. Maybe the Marshall will have something this Summer, or the Boyleston in Boston. I hope Alex returns to running tournaments.
There is the 2nd annual East Coast Open in Phily over Memorial Day, although that still has a high cost. If you can wait for Labor Day weekend I think the annual New York state championship [run by Goichberg] may be FIDE rated, but I am not positive about that…
Thanks, Larry. Philly $250 to enter which I would consider. The cost of going to Philly makes it too expensive for my budget.
The New York tournament doesn’t have detail’s listed yet, but that is well worth checking into. I know people in that area. If I can’t stay with them, there is always a camping option.
I have, thanks, and that is a possibility if I can do those dates. My only concern is coming back over the border with possible COVID-19 border restrictions/hassles. A friend may be coming down from Quebec to play chess this weekend. We’ll see if they hassle him coming through to Vermont. Of course, it’s a fluid situation. Things can change a lot in three weeks.
