Another bit of information about 2012 US Open

From USCF website

US Open 4-12 August
Hilton Vancouver Washington
301 West 6th Street
Vancouver, WA 98660
Chess Rate: $110
Rooms cannot be booked at this time

Hopefully there will be a lot more information this month so people
can start planing.
I expect there will be lots of information about the event
on http://www.nwchess.com

The Clark County Fair will held at the same time as the US Open. It is
one of the major county fairs in Washington State.

Note that anyone can book a room at the site hotel, with two double beds, for $111 right now, at the Hilton Web site, using the standard Hilton corporate code discount which is easily found online. (See HHonors.)

That is at the main Hilton site, with the standard well-known Hilton discount code. Digging around the discount travel sites you might well do better, maybe beat the chess rate by enough to notice.

Chess rates that offer little or no discount over what a home user can get online with a little surfing and sleuthing are too common. Part of that is the competitive market, with priceline and its many competitors…but come on: For the US Open, the chess rate for a double room is one measly dollar less than the rate I could get right now at the host hotel’s Web site?

Then again, for the USATE that rate is much lower than the “chess rate.” Oy…

We do not have cable, and must wait till season two of Portlandia makes it to Netflix.

Looking forward to visiting Powell’s!

Information about the Denker High School event at the 2012 US Open can be found here http://www.denkerchess.com/

Heard about one fellow who is going to look into taking the Amtrak Train from Vancouver BC to Vancouver WA for the event.
Some of us who live in Vancouver WA might be able to pick people up at the train station.

Some steps have been made in having a several section scholastic event at the US Open site in Vancouver WA. More details next month. Also might be some outside events in a park across the street from the Hilton Hotel playing site.

An event in Vancouver WA doing the US Open that might be of interest to people attending.

I just checked airfare on Southwest from Norfolk, VA to Portland, OR. 8/3 to 8/13. You can get a round trip for about $266 each way right now with one stop before Portland.
Regards, Ernie

I’m thinking it’d be helpful if the tournament announcement would note not only the nearest major airport (Portland, OR), but also the approximate drive time (rush hour vs. non-rush hour) from Sea-Tac airport.

Some persons may prefer to use Sea-Tac, e.g., if non-stop flights for them are available there but not available at Portland.

Mapquest says from SeaTac airport to Hilton in Vancouver WA
Via I-5 S
2 hrs 38 mins / 152.85 miles

JetBlue Logan to Portland rt, non-stop $450.

This will probably be in the April CHESS LIFE.

Paris?

I have been told in the past there G/30 events held during US Opens. Any one like to see some G/30 play in Vancouver? I have
had one request.

If you are coming to Vancouver for the US Open you might want to plan to view the volcano Mount St. Helens as it is today.
It blew it’s top on May 18, 1980. The Vancouver newspaper has a feature article about the mountain at http://www.columbian.com/news/mount-st-helens/ .
One good place to learn more about the mountain then and today.

The site of this market is about two blocks from the Hilton Hotel the site of the US Open.

The Vancouver Farmers Market will reopen for its 23rd season March 17, the market’s board announced Wednesday.

The downtown farmers market, on the west side of Esther Short Park at Sixth and Esther streets, will run from March 17 to Oct. 28. Hours will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays.

For more information, visit vancouverfarmersmarket.com.

USCF Sales will be running the bookstore at the 2012 US Open. Will be interesting to see what they bring to sell. I have not been to a
US Open since 2001. My first one was 1963 in Chicago.

.

“Toby” (Tim Tobiason) stopped selling paper books when he is the vendor at tournaments. He now sells only chess sets and digital software and media.

The real good interactive chess eBook has not been invented, yet. It is probably only a few years away. Unless the unstoppable threat of digital piracy kills this innovation in its crib.
.

I might go to this. What class sections are there?
