Hi. I have a new Pocket PC/Smartphone (Samsung i760) that uses the Windows Mobile Professional 6 operating system. I’d like to know your opinions on the best chess game software to buy for the Win Mobile OS. By “best” I’m talking about both strength and graphics. I am not a strong player and have been away from the game for many years but have become reinterested and enjoy playing the game very much. I’d like to be able to play against my smartphone when I’m not at my desktop. I’d really appreciate as many opinions as possible. Thank you very much. AtownPA.
Pocket Fritz 3 just came out and is quite good. Mobile Thinker lets you log into icc.
I have Pocket Grandmaster on my i760. It’s about half the price of Fritz. $25. And you can download a working demo version and see how you like it first.
There are also several different chess engines you can install and use besides what comes with the software. I have a total of 6 different chess engines installed in mine. This way you can have a greater variety of play.
And it has a variety of board & piece styles and colors.
It will store your games in .pgn format and you can then either use the data cable to directly download to your computer or email them or other ways to get them onto your computer (desktop or laptop).

It’s about the fastest way to use up the battery. Well, if you have the extended battery, it will still run a very long time. One thing I learned about the i760 is, that it is a good idea when you are done (with whatever you are doing and plan on setting the i760 aside for a while) is to hit Start, Settings, System, Memory, Running Programs and stop whatever is running that you don’t need. Personally, I leave ActiveSync, Wireless Sync & Wireless Manager running and stop everything else. Your battery will last much longer that way.
Oh yeah, it does have a lot of other features. Analysis mode, annotation, etc.
I should also mention this one: the Delphi Trainer.

There is a free version 0.7 that you can download and use. Works fine. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles (like saving pgn files) that the about $20 version 1.0 has.
The number one selling factor for me in all the different ones I looked at, was twofold. The ability to save games in pgn. And the ability to change the chess engine.
And only Pocket Grandmaster satisfied both, at least from all those I looked at.

Many thanks to Condor and Kevin. I have since purchased PocketGrandmaster and am having a lot of fun with it. Again, thank you both. Bill.
One more thing about Pocket Fritz – it can access the online CB database.
