Hey Rich,
Do you have a site? Just announce it and people will eventually come. I might be interested. Maybe run a “grand opening” chess tournament to advertise it or a simultaneous exhibition. E-mail me and we can help set this up. But the first step is there a site? Perhaps a library, school, rec center, or some town facility would be a good inexpensive way to start a club.

Alan Kantor
No site yet. Didn’t really look for one as I wasn’t sure what kind of response I would get out here in the boonies.
I’ll look around a little though and let you know if I find something.
Thanks for your response.

I haven’t given up on this. Still trying to find a site albeit is going slow.
I will need some help though if this gets going as my job takes me out of town often.
Try a place were it is small and something like a resturant, not a pots and bang or one that has way to much noise. Think of something like a small coffee house. You might find players that just wanted a cup of coffee and find people that want to play chess. Most might want to play a game of chess, will they always show up that is the hard part.
With a small club they do not have a dine to pay for rent, and they are starting small. After you pick a name of the chess club, have a tournament; find a tournament director or just become one, clubs need to build a name in the city and also the state. The best way a club can get better is just word of mouth. Start a dialog with the state assocation of New York, some people will only go to a chess club if they know there are members.

Douglas M. Forsythe, local td
Thanks for the tips. I have become a club level director although I will need some help in the beginning. I haven’t directed an event yet. I am getting a basic understanding from the material USCF sent as well as some pairing software I am trying out.
I may have found a place in a local church. Lots of room and lots of tables. Not firmed up yet though. I will be naming the club “Castles in Cobleskill” if I ever get that far with it.
Thanks again
Richard
