Last year, I ran CB 10 on a budget Toshiba laptop just fine (AMD chip).
I just got another budget Toshiba (Intel Core i3-380M, 4 GB RAM, Win Home Premium). No go so far.
Is it one of those 32/64 thingies? Do I need Win 7 Pro? Or? (It might simply be a licensing issue, as I didn’t know enough to deactivate before uninstalling on old machines.)
Here’s a link to a forum where some other guys are discussing a similar problem. The last post on that page contains a few links to patches that apparently helped them. I don’t have Chessbase and haven’t tried those patches so obviously I can’t vouch for the patches or the links, caveat emptor.
Are you running 64-bit Windows 7? Did Windows 7 come pre-installed on the laptop or did you purchase it separately and install it yourself? You can use the Upgrade Advisor application to be sure there are no compatibility issues with your hardware and Windows 7. microsoft.com/windows/window … visor.aspx
If that shows any hardware compatibility issues and your laptop came with Win7 pre-installed you may be able to convince the vendor to fix the problem or replace your laptop.
I was able to actually open databases this a.m., but still crashed a couple times (in process of downloading 2011 MegaBase updates) I failed to install program updates last night; will try again.
I use CB11 under windows 7 and have had very few problems. Yes you can buy a straight upgrade but it is important to install the updates/service packs after installing CB11.
To be clear, the only problem I’m having is during the MegaBase update interface. But for that to crash is incredibly annoying. Look & feel aside, I think that the guts of CB 9, 10, & 11 are pretty much the same.
This feature doesn’t NEED to be used to stay up to date. In the olden days, I used to download & concatenate PGN files from TWIC.
