Chronos - LED on, beep off, does not stop at end (double-flagging is possible)
Many players use the club’s Excaliburs or Precisions.
At our club the time control is usually 40/80, G/30. This can be clocked either “conventionally”, or 40/75 - 5 sec delay.
As for the clock lights and beepers, I don’t think we have standard rules on these - but typically, LEDs are on and beepers are off, other than at the point of the time control.
I think length of time controls has a lot to do with how long the club meets for, and if its a college/scholastic oriented club.
At the local university, its almost impossible to get players to do anything but speed chess (G/5 d5). I guess they just want to get as many games in as possible in the 3 or 4 hour time slot.
-disclaimer: I haven’t been to the university club in many years, but I did play the faculty advisor (that runs the university chess club) recently, and he still prefers 5min games.
At the Paducah chess club, they meet for 3 hours from 1pm to 4pm on Saturdays with the last couple players wrapping it up by 3:30. (its a very casual chess club).
An ancient analog clock made an appearance toward the end of our club meeting last night. It was set for 20 minutes per side. Its main purpose was to ensure that we left the library multipurpose room before closing time.
