Disappearing comments

I have twice posted my comments on Greg Shahade’s views of opening books. All comments are displayed on a single page. Mine are not there. The last were posted tyere 5 days ago.

Moderator Mode: On

I just checked the Moderator Logs which has a record of any type of moderation action and who performed it. Some moderation actions can certainly be done by regular forum members. For instance if a person deletes their own post, it is recorded in the Moderator Logs. If a post is either moved or deleted, that is also recorded in the Moderation Logs.

There is no sign of any of your posts from the articles area being either moved or deleted.

Did you see your comments on that particular article thread, or did you post it and assume it made it to the thread?

If you did see your posts on the thread and they disappeared, then that is something for Mike Nolan to check into because that would be a software kind of thing.

As I said there is no record that anyone either deleted or moved your posts from that area, so we know it was not done by anyone on this forum.

That leaves it as either the software lost it, or the posts you made did not really make it to that forum.

I think I see the problem. This page begins the comments on Greg’s article. Note that at the top of that page we see Page 1 of 2. However, at the bottom of that page there is no Next option. If you click on the “2” option at the top of the page, you are then taken to page 2 of the comments and both of David’s posts appear. The format of the Chess Life Articles subforum differs from the other subforums in other ways as well.

Perhaps this will work as a link to the second page.

As SysAdmin has explained to us before, the Articles forum is different from the others because of the way it is linked to the articles themselves.

As I recall, the explanation runs something like this: Whenever an article appears, a dummy post is created in the Articles forum. However, this dummy post is invisible. This trick causes all kinds of problems, because noone can figure out exactly how the phpBB code works in order to modify it properly.

For one thing, the dummy post causes an off-by-one error. For example, if there are exactly 15 visible posts (the normal number of posts per page), some parts of the software think there are 15 while others think there are 16. This results in a second page appearing, with no posts on it. Instead, a message saying “there are no posts yet” appears.

The failure of the Articles forum to present a “next” option at the bottom of each page is apparently, somehow, another consequence of having this invisible post.

Meanwhile, articles with no posts do not show up in the Articles forum at all.

Wouldn’t it be better if this dummy post were a real post? It could say something like, “Click here to read about Fischer Random Chess on Mars. Then you may post a comment here.”

With this post becoming visible, it just might eliminate the various bugs we have all seen in the Articles forum. Plus, it would draw attention to articles not yet commented on. Some of the lazier among us (such as me) never bother to visit the articles directly, and find out about an article only when a response is posted in the Articles forum.

Also, how many posters even know that, once an article is commented on in the Articles forum, the article itself can be viewed by clicking on its title at the top? As I recall (from a few years ago), I didn’t know that until somebody on this forum told me. If the “dummy” post were visible, and included a link, it would be obvious how to get to the article.
