How are they done?
I haven’t ever seen one.
I can see how you do an opening tournament (although I would think interest would be low)
I presume USCF rating of either is not a consideration

what I suspect (or what might work)
Is that the TD takes two classic end games position or maybe an interesting master endgames and sets up the board position on every table. And a MO more akin to Duplication Bridge the competitors compete from the same starting position.
I said two games because with one win for each side is possible. The competitor with the best result for the match wins the point. One problem with that is endgames should be studied slowly but maybe that is the best we can do.
But how do you handle games that should be drawn? I am thinking maybe a different tournament.
We had discussed this before I believe in a thread on “thematic” tournaments. As long as it is advertised in advance and the players know what they are getting into… you can start from any ‘legal’ chess position. Personally i agree that to make it fair it should probably be two games against each opponent… once as white, and once as black, which only makes it feasible as a quick chess tournament.
You just invented a tournament for scholastic chess players to teach them how to mate with Rook/King… queen/king… Just start them that way and rate it… lol
I’m not so sure about that ‘any legal position’ statement.
If you start from a position where there’s a mate in 1, that shouldn’t be ratable.
