FIDE to require increment?

I understood a “well informed source” to say that at some point, sections of USCF tournaments which we plan to submit for rating by FIDE will be required to use an increment time control. I’m not clear whether he thought this was an imminent rule change which could be adopted at this year’s FIDE Congress, or at some point in the more distant future.

I’m planning an event for January 2013, is there any chance such a change could be in effect by then?

I’m not sure where your ‘well informed source’ was getting their information from. There is nothing on the RTRC agenda to make this change in Istanbul later this summer.

The only place that increment is ‘required’ is for title norm tournaments and even then you can use a non-increment and non-delay time control.

I’m not sure where your ‘well informed source’ was getting their information from. There is nothing on the RTRC agenda to make this change in Istanbul later this summer.

Maybe the rating fee goes down with each second of increment the tournament uses.
