FIDE World Under-20 Championship

I know we are all focusing on the US Championship and US Women’s Championship, but the World Junior is also going on right now. I usually follow the progress of the American contingent. But this time there aren’t any. Why not?

One guess would be scheduling conflicts – several of our top juniors are currently playing in the US Championship. Other than that, I don’t know.

Maybe, but there are plenty of worthy players who could have represented the US well and benefit from the experience. Of course many of them are also students.

You don’t really think that FIDE scheduling events (like the latest Congress) so that they conflict with US Chess events is a coincidence, do you?

Actually I do. You give FIDE too much credit for being organized. Continental is even less so. Especially post COVID.

The World Junior got announced this year with about a week to register…

Yeah, but if there had been a potential conflict with, say, the Russian youth championship, you can be sure they would have picked a different date!
