And now, the newsletter…
Game Of The Week
This week’s game comes from the Colorado Springs Chess Club’s July One Night Quick tournament. The club meets every Tuesday night in downtown Colorado Springs. We mostly run month-long events. However, every now and then, a month will have a 5th Tuesday and we can schedule a one-night event. They have to be at faster time controls to get all the games done in one evening, but it will bring out different chess players.
Since the faster events use a different rating for the players, the USCF does not require them to keep score like standard chess. So, I put out the club’s no-cost, non-carbon score sheets if anyone wants to keep score. Also, I put out any lightly-used, carbon score sheets that come back when someone starts the header information or moves but then I have to repair the games.
I was raised to take what you want, but eat what you take. No waste. There are starving kids in Africa. Well, this mindset has crossed over into my chess-club-supplies-management-theory. So, I pick up the lightly-used score sheets that have been rejected by the very picky standard-players and hope the more casual quick-players will use them.
So far, the quick players have been just as picky, and the two, lightly-used carbon score sheets have been passed over for a year. I thought no one would ever take them just because “some slime” was too good to cross out 1. e4 c5 and write the actual first moves of the game and save a tree.
NM Gunnar Andersen (left) scratches his head as he watches his brother get his first rated win.
Finally, NM Gunnar Andersen came down from his home in the clouds to play on Tuesday night with his brother. He is very good and very fast with making chess moves. So, keeping score too is not a problem for him at all, and he asked for some score sheets.
I went into Ebay mode and told him, “I have two lovely, lightly-used score sheets right here. They have had only one previous owner, who only recorded their first move and no accident history. They are carbon equipped so you can not only record your game but you can also provide a copy for the TD. I bought them for 8 cents a piece, but I could let them go for free and hand deliver them. This offer is good for one night only!”
Since NM Gunnar Andersen was nice enough to use the used score sheets, he was the only one who had carbon score sheets and turned in their games. Therefore, he wins the honor of being the Game Of The Week.
