Be aware, while the book was at the printers there was a change to the TD Tip link for rule 28D1. Non US Chess ratings verified. The formulas in the linked document are for converting FIDE ratings to US Chess ratings. Those new formulas kick in on January 1, 2024.
The implementation date has been moved to 1 March 2024.
The e-book available at Amazon is still the 2021/2022 version; do you have an expected timeline for when an updated e-book will be available?
I will send this question along to US Chess. They are the publishers.
Thanks for the update.
Tim,
Can you confirm that USCF’s intent as the publishers is that the updated rules can only be obtained in Kindle format through a new purchase, rather than as an update to the previously purchased 7th edition rules in Kindle format?
Best regards,
Hi Richard,
As far as I know you need to purchase a new Kindle copy for the complete update. I will ask US Chess if that is still what needs to be done. My memory on the possible Kindle update hoops is wonky at best.
Good Chess,
Tim
Thanks. I know some books I have bought have just had updated versions made available to current owners. I would have expected that would be the case here since the update file is a single page long, but if it’s not the case it’s not the case.

Thanks for your idea. Some things that might help you accomplish your goals. I do not write the rulebook. What I do is edit what the Delegates pass as new and revised rules at their annual meeting. Those rulebook additions, deletions, and changes come from submitted motions that they vote on. Next, the publisher, US Chess, decides how often to publish a physical copy of the rulebook. The main chapters dealing with tournament rules are free online (check out the link at the bottom of Just the Rules). Those online rules get updated editorially each year. Any concerns about a different printing schedule - both online and physical - might be best addressed to the Delegates and Publisher.
Some TD Tips could use some work.
I can’t find the post that this is a reply to?
I’m pretty sure that post was first heavily downvoted and then removed.
My US Chess Federation rule book is that Tim Just writes/edits the rulebook. It’s on the cover.
Now what? I’m getting a thumbs down because I want to improve the resolve of US Chess Federation by wanting it to follow the guidelines for sanctioned sports.
Actually, downvotes are a fine way to show your like or dislike for a post, but they don’t cause the moderators to consider whether to remove a post. Flagging a post will cause us to evaluate it. The post in question was pulled because it clearly violated the AUG.
US Chess IS following guidelines for sanctioned sports. Saying otherwise would be factually incorrect.
