Who does not want to see the greatest attacking player of all time go against the Mozart of chess? I think this is a wonderful promotion for the sport. Of course, all it takes is a sponsor to get this happen… I would contribute $20 to get this happen. Does anyone here have any suggestions on how to get this possible. This is of course expensive, but if USCF can get this event happen, it would be fantastic in the annals of chess.
Everyone is talking about Mayweather vs Pacquiao in boxing. Comparing Michael Jordan against Lebron James in basketball and the list goes on and on. So lets make this happen while Kasparov is still alive.
I cannot imagine classical chess match between Kasparov and Carlsen willl ever be played. The biggest obsticle is Garry himself, since he has not played a classical control game in ages and he surely understands his chances to prevail in this match are close to none.
The best we can hope is some kind of promotional/charity event where those two are playing couple of blitz or rapid games.
I think yours (and mine for that matter) $20.00 would be spent better if put towards organizing Anand-Carlsen World Championship Match this year on US soil.
There MIGHT be enough $20 bills in the world to bribe Kirsan into allowing a NYC-based WC match…but that is a long shot to get him to give up that much control and undergo that much scrutiny.
I disagree. To recollect the history, Kirsan put a lot of his own money (and Republic’s of Kalmikia) into few of those championships but he eventually got very tired of this. Now, Kirsan is no longer leader of Kalmikia and clearly is not looking to spend his own money.
There is a tramendous interest to the Anand-Carlsen match from all parts of the world and I am sure FIDE is looking for some serious bidding as they will be getting their 20% cut. So essentially, the bigger the prize fund, the better FIDE and Kirsan will end up.
Provided serious money will be found, USA and NYC in particular is a perfect location for this match in my opinion. as it is neutral to both players unlike Asia or Europe.
It would not be surprising if the championship match is held in London. Or some venue in France if corporate sponsors are found. I doubt that either would like to leave their comfort zone in Europe, unless the money is spectacular.
And this match is still on the calendar for 7 months from now (or so I think). That’s a lot of work in a short time.
Also, I think finding corporate sponsorship is difficult in the best of times, but here, there must be a number of potential sponsors who want no connection with some of the things they read about FIDE’s President. You can be sure the large corporations vet.
Does USCF provide some money to FIDE? Do all chess federations in every country pay dues to FIDE? I am just curious. I think it should. I think more money FIDE has, the more possibility that they will hold World Champio nships in major cities like what Kasparov stated.
I like to sponsor but I only have $150.
By the way, I also like the idea of a World Championship Match to be held on the Champions home country (New Delhi, or in Taj Mahal). I believe that in this way, there will be a nationwide pride associated with having a chess champion. I feel like the more the country is involved, more people will gain interest. What do you think?
Why don’t we see how GM Carlsen fares against GM Kasparov’s “light work” first? The current world champion has proven very resilient when it comes to defending his crown.
I agree. With more money - if they hold it in Rinkydinkytown they make a bigger profit. There may be more motivation with less money, actually - to get the numbers up.
It pains me to watch the process of venue selection for these matches. One can infer much from this now two-year-old story. en.chessbase.com/home/TabId/211/PostId/4006994 It is all incomprehensible and screams out for change. I believe that $$$ are often a secondary consideration. Foremost are the wacky considerations brought on by FIDE politics.
FIDE has been using part of the proceeds from the World Championship to fund itself. Sort of like the way organized crime would take a percentage or “skim” at the casinos. FIDE likes to model itself and would dearly love to be part of the Olympics. The scandals over venue selection, bribery, gifts and scholarships, and other hanky panky have similarities to what has occurred in the past in world championship chess.
With the recent decision by the Olympic Committee to consider dropping some traditional sports like wrestling, I would think that FIDE is slavering to get another shot to be added to the sport schedule. They can fit chess in between rhythmic gymnastics and synchronized diving and drop javelin, wrestling, and the decathalon.
That has always been a part of the racket. Let’s not fool ourselves.
Exactly. I don’t lament the idea that chess will never be a part of the Olympics. Sorry kids…the physical effort of sitting and thinking for 5-8yrs will NEVER reach/exceed the physical effort of being the fastest in the world at running 100M.
“It seems that the AICF [India] was given much more time than ‘three months following the match in Moscow,’ because FIDE is taking today’s [April 8, 2013’s] bid seriously. Treasurer and Executive Director Nigel Freeman told us that FIDE will be ‘sending someone, as soon as visas allow, to Chennai to finalise the details. They were offered an option, which they have taken up, for the dates as per the calendar.’”
I like the fact that they will do it on Anand’s hometown. This will surely give him all the motivation to put Magnus back to school. Also, I think that future WC matches should be held on major cities of the Champion’s country. If Hikaru will win the championship, then it should be held at New York, Chicago or St. Louis. I really like the idea of bringing the whole country together to support their countrymen. Just a thought.
