Not clear who the people are. I guess he’s been advised that he really can’t sue the US government. One can sense a certain desperation in his latest PR offensive. One wonders what is really going on, particularly with Agon, Ltd. and a hoped for WC in NYC.
“FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov told a recent press conference in Moscow that he would lawsuits in connection with publications about what he is to carry out commercial transactions with the group “Islamic State” (banned in Russia).
“We have prepared actions for the protection of honor and dignity to the American and European newspapers which have published this information, as well as the two chess players - one former and one is not the former, that social media have written that the head of FIDE trading oil with a terrorist organization”, - Ilyumzhinov said.
Recall, on November 25 last year, the US Treasury announced the introduction of sanctions, related to the situation in Syria. The sanctions list includes six companies and four individuals, including Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, who denies all the allegations against him.” kirsan.today/en/
If he sues, it will be interesting to see what jurisdiction he chooses. I won’t be the US, but some of the Euro countries do have weaker defamation protections, even as to public figures. Maybe he’ll use the legal theory espoused by Polgar during her deposition during the troubles litigation, to wit, any comments that hurt my feelings are illegal and defamatory even if what is said is true. I can provide her video deposition testimony if anyone doubts what I’m asserting. It’s kind of a birds of a feather flock together situation…
“Much ado about nothing.” This sounds like bluster with no eventual attempt to do anything about it. There seems to be a lot of that malady among the political class today. He has no idea what a deposition would be like in a western country.
Not amazing at all when you consider that Kirsan and his minions, of whom those involved in The Troubles were significant players, are still in the news chessicly. Given Kirsan’s involvement in FIDE, the sanctions against him and US Chess’ relationship to FIDE, you really can’t just forget him, despite what you post.
BTW, what’s the status of the adjourned federal case in Texas of which we are all still parties to the active portion of it? Feel free to PM me with an update–joined party to joined party.
I leave these details to the lawyers that were hired to handle them. If you have inquiries, that would be the proper channel for you to pursue for information. I’d suggest you contact the US Chess Executive Director.
