Nakamura 1-0 over Giri --- Round 10 London GP

Nice end game. Giri went for the win in a probably drawn blockaded position (+ 0.18 for white) and allowed Nakamura’s counter-attack.

Very nice endgame combination. Wasn’t so easy to see that that endgame was won for white, with black having 2 passed pawns and the potential for another if white’s king strayed. I think Nakamura had to look at least 10 moves ahead to see all this, if not more.

It was a very poor outing for Nakamura, but perhaps the game against Giri can give him the strength to just forget it. Like a baseball manager once said (I forget who) when his team lost something like 19-0: “it’s the same amount of losses as if we lost 1-0”. It’s just one single tournament. Many more to go.

Right - even the greatest have these sorts of bad tournaments. Fischer’s minus score result at Buenos Aires in 1960 is an example.
