FIDE announced it would use its wild card to invite Hikaru Nakamura as the final Grand Prix invitee.
Other Americans invited are Wesley So, Sam Shankland, Lenier Dominguez and Levon Aronian. They are among 24 Grand Prix invitees so the US has a good chance one will advance.
The Grand Prix tournaments, in Berlin and Belgrade early next year, will choose the final seeds for the 2022 Candidates tournament. (Caruana has already qualified for the Candidates.)
Nakamura has not played a rated game since December 2019 but FIDE noted he was still rated 21st in the world and had played a lot of online chess. FIDE president Arkady Dvorkovich had one wild card and spent it on Naka.
