Is it me, or should the individual winners be the lead story of this tournament. The K-9 champion isn’t even mentioned in the lead story, but the one team from Texas certainly is.
I personally think USCF should have a true Scholastic team championship (these days it could even be done in ICC like the USCL), and bag the fony team titles in the individual tournaments, but I know that will never happen.
The story mentions the two teams and the one individual that took first in the two championship sections without needing tie-breaks. A four-way tie at 6-1 in the K-9 championship section is a little messier than the sole 7-0 winning the K-8 championship section. The four 6-1s combined for 5 draws, one 1/2-point bye, 1 loss, 1 forfeit win (round 1) and 20 over-the-board wins. If the two 5.5-0.5 players had had a decisive game (resulting in a single 6.5-0.5 winner) then that one person would most likely also have been mentioned.
Then again, the K-9 is the premier section of the tournament–and usually significantly stronger, although it wasn’t so clear this year. Look at the Yearbook, only the K-9 winner is listed as the National Junior High champion; K-8 isn’t even mentioned.
K-3 and K-5 in the National Elementary, and K-8 in the National JH are generally billed as championship sections. I’d prefer to see them listed as such in the yearbook along with the K-6 Elementary and K-9 JH champions.
FWIW, there is a more detailed story on the Junior High on CLO now, listing the winners of both the K-9 and K-8 championship sections, with photos and several games.
It looks like all the other section winners are listed as well.
I agree with the ED. If the teams aren’t listed in the Yearbook, they should be as well given that USCF is considering them the National Team Champions for these events.
