Nat'l Chess Day

While I know that USCF is hoping to promote chess events (tournaments) for chess day, our club is considering something different. While events will promote chess to the “choir”, we are hoping to work with a local bookstore (national chain location near where our club meets), set up boards, and have the store’s chess books nearby to promote sails.

If we want to promote chess, we need to NEW people involved. A tournament doesn’t have much to offer someone new to the game.

What is YOUR chess club planning?

Good idea. There’s a book store near me where chess players sometimes hang out for skittles, so maybe I could talk to the management about something like this. When is National Chess Day?

I think it ought to be the anniversary of when Richard Nixon told Fischer to go get 'em. Closest to presidential recognition that I know of.

I wonder how many people saw the article on the origins of National Chess Day that appeared on the USCF website on July 4th:

Sounds good to me! also to promote the game a friend of mine who ran the local chess club believed “you have to bring the game to the people” during local festivals or even music concerts (outdoor public events) you would be surprised at how many people know the “moves” but really have no interest in the game. For those people we would set about ten boards clocks and all. Then placed a BLINDFOLD on our club player(master) for a simul! we only helped by calling out the moves the pubic played to our master. Nice trophys went to the winners!! spectators GALORE !!! we made money (refreshments chess sets etc.) before i moved from the state my friend had “two” chess clubs! ANYTHING to promote this wonderful game !

I noticed today that the only CHESS item that Office Depot sells is Brain Games: Chess. I am going to ask my local store if on National Chess Day I could use my laptop or a computer they supply to demo this piece of software, hand out copies of NORTHWEST CHESS magazine and maybe CHESS LIFE and post a notice about area chess clubs. I don’t own Brain Games CHESS but could purchase a copy and learn how best to demo it before National Chess Day. Ofcourse I would expect the store to post some notice before the day about the demo and I would try to get publicity for the event in various media in the area. I am not a top rated chess player but it is probably not necessary to be one to demo this software.
