Rating Floor

Does the “class prize” rating floor applies only to the first place winner?

For example, in the recent Chicago Open (200505303551):

Under 2200 - 2 players tied for second place and winning $2250 each. Their post rating is not 2200.

Under 2000 - Several players tied for second place and won $1100 each. Their post rating also not reflecting rating floor of 2000.

Just wondering.

I’ve always assumed that there are some organizers who don’t report when a player wins a large class prize. I have no evidence for this, so I can’t name names. It would be interesting to check out the new floors from the HB tournament.

The Class Prize floor applies to all players with an established rating under 2000 who win a class prize of $1000 or more. It does apply to all prizes, including ‘place’ prizes, in sections restricted to those under 2000. However, it does not apply to prizes won in sections with experts or masters unless the prize is for those under 2000.

The floor is imposed some time after the event in question, so the player’s post-event rating will not necessarily be at or above the class prize floor.

Further, depending on when the class prize list is sent to the USCF office, when the floor entries are made and when the players who receive such a floor next play in a rated event, it may take some time for the floors to have any visible impact.

Walter Brown was doing the class prize floors, I don’t know who’s doing them in his absence, or if floors from some recent events, including the HB and the Chicago Open, have even been imposed yet.

I’ve just updated MSA so that it can display floor information, but it will take some time to load floors for players.

I think organizers of large class prize events do a good job of sending in the class prize lists.

If prize winners are going to get a 2000 floor what is the purpose of CCA floors at 1600 and 1800?

As I understand it, someone who wins $1000 in an Under 1600 section gets a class prize floor of 1600, and so on.

Yes, and in addition, sometimes the CCA feels that the USCF rating floor is not high enough.

For example, I just played at the HB Global Chess Challenge. My rating jumped from 1531 to 1748 after that tournament. The MSA page currently lists my rating floor at 1500, presumably due to the 1700+ rating. Once my prize floor kicks in, my USCF rating floor will be 1600. However, I have a CCA rating floor of 2000.

So, an additional purpose of 1600 and 1800 CCA floors would be to prevent vastly underrated players from winning large prizes in several consecutive class sections (U1200, U1400, U1600, for example).

That would be nice! When should we see this in the MSA?

Are there floors for Quick Chess?

Yes, there are floors for quick ratings, butI have some some data issues with them. A second issue is whether anyone cares what their quick chess floor is.

I think I have regular floors loaded and displaying properly, though I’m going to watch to see if there are any data consistency issues with them as well.

Nolan,

I went to look for my floor, and didn’t have anything listed. I noticed floors listed for other members when I put their ID in to check. Is my floor not listing because my ID is one of the old 20XX’s? (20069095)

Rating floors only go down to 1400 (so you need to have had an established rating over 1600).

The info in the rating supplement needs to be changed. While mentioning that floors exist at 100 (ratings can’t go lower so it’s a default floor), 1400, … 2100, it also uses as an example a high rating of 1588 producing a 1300 floor.

Someone will have to verify this, but I don’t think that anyone is listed with a 100 point floor. My wife certainly isn’t.

Do not think the rating floor of 100 would be a great idea to be posted. Having the rating floor posted (if you have one), could make some of the inactive players come out to play. If they can accept being at their rating floor, the security of it posted could make them risk to play.

If the rating floor is post for everyone, what good would it do for the player seeing the rating floor of 100. If you are a adult in class C or class D, it does not help your self-esteem seeing you can blow away your rating down to 100.
