RBO's

I have a couple of questions regarding organizing an RBO. First let me say I have never done this before.

  1. What if no one who enters has a rating. How are they paired for the four rounds.

  2. How are their ratings determined?

Thanks

Are you talking about a 4SS (4-round swiss)? Well, as I understand it, in a swiss the rated players are seeded in order of rating. Then any unrated players are seeded after the rated players in alphabetic order:

1 Smith 1150
2 Able 1100
3 Zulu 1090
4 Simpson 1000
5 Arno UNR
6 Burns UNR
7 Davis UNR
8 Garcia UNR

HTH,

Hi,
Yes that’s exactly what I’m talking about. We just started a chess club at our school and also just became an alliliate of the USCF. There are only two kids with a rating out of all our kids.

Dou you know how those without ratings would get a rating or would that be determined by the USCF when we send them the results?

Thanks

That’s right, those ratings will be determined by the USCF.

However, all the players in a rated event must be USCF members first. I run a club at a High School, and right now only have enough USCF members to run a QUAD when we meet (each Monday) - and that’s with me playing sometimes!

My students are too old for a youth membership, so they pay $25 per year. I don’t know what age group you’ve got, but under 13 years of age is cheaper. You may want to look into JTP(sp?) or Junior Tournament Player. This membership allows you to have closed rated events. In other words, your JTPs will only play other JTPs in the same school, but they get a rating and the membership is cheaper still.

That’s why I was hoping to get some free TLAs! That way we could get some USCF members from outside the school and get some rated OCTOS or TORNADOS.

If you’re interested, look up my first three rated events from the end of last calendar year. Go to look up a member’s rating, but instead, look up a tournament by name and enter “BHCC” for Baldwin High Chess Club and you’ll see that all those kids are rated now, but in the first quad only one of the students and myself had a rating.

BTW, I started my club 3 years ago and its taken this long to get enough members for a rated event! I guess that’s why the Club Tournament Director is good for 3 years…

Good Luck,

Our chess club is very new. Only a couple months old. It covers grades K-8 so our children should allqualify for the scholastic membership fee. I saw something about the JTP program you mentioned in “A guide to Scholastis Chess” which was obtained from the USCF and I also saw the following passage on the USCF website under Scxholast chess.
"RATED CHESS EVENTS:

Affiliates may run chess competitions in which students acquire national ratings. These ratings are also included in the Rating List. We also offer a program that allows scholastic players to participate in nationally rated scholastic-only in-school tournaments without meeting USCF membership requirements. ".

I think this is the direction you was stearing me in. I really apprteciate all the feedback anf info you are giving me. From the passage above it appears that wew could have a tournament in school and all the kids could play even if they don’t join the USCF, although we are trying to get them all to join. Am I correct in thinking the passage above means they can play in their own school tourney without joining the USCF and still get a rating?

Thanks

Well, we never tried the JTP, but I think the kids “join” the USCF for $5 per year. They can then play rated events against each other. However, as I understand it, they cannot play “full” USCF members in rated events.

If you want to see what I’ve done with my chess club, maybe get some ideas, see my website listed below.

Good Luck,

OK, I’ve emailed the tla@uschess.org people to clear up what a free RBO TLA should look like. I know it has to have RBO in the title, be U1200, have an EF<$20 and be a one day event. So apparently it can be a RR or a SS, the number of rounds is up to me and the time control is too. So, I just submitted the following:

Every Mon (Except Holidays). BHCC RBO U1200 Quick QUADS! 3RR, G/10.
Room 429, Baldwin High CC, 841 Ethel T. Kloberg Dr., Baldwin, NY 11510.
$$12/Quad. EF: $6. Reg: 2:45. Rds: 3-3:20-3:40. Ent: cash on-site or paypal.
Info: A. Jorge Garcia, calcpage.tripod.com/bhcc

I was thinking of an OCTO (3SS G/10 for up to 8 players) or Tornado (4SS G/10 for up to 16 players), but lets see how many people we can attract with this TLA first! BTW, the FREE RBO TLA is for up to 4 lines, right? How long is a line?

What do you all think?

Hi,
I’m checking out your club website. Looks cool. I didn’t have time yet to really get into it but I will.
I like your announcement. I was also wondering about the length of each line. Maybe if we look at an actual announcvement in Chess Life we could count how many spaces are in each line and then design our announcements to stay that lenght or less.

Hi Steve,

Well, I submitted a TLA of about the same length last year and they charged me for 6 lines (the last “info” line was free + $10 the first month + $5 for the next month).

I just submitted the ad I listed above and they took it no problem! I told them to run it from Sept - Jun and they said it will start in the March issue. So wish me luck, lets see if I get a bunch of new players at my weekly Quads.

If I get a lot of interest, maybe well do some Octos (3SS, G/15) or Tornados (4SS, G/10). If the RBOs don’t attract many players maybe I’ll try a free blitz tla (6DRR, G/5)?

Hello,

Since so many of you have scholastic clubs I thought you might be interested in playing some of my scholastic chess club members. I have set up a free chess playing program at studentchess.org

It is kid safe with no chat. I hope that some of your students will join us.

Sincerely,

Dennis Steele

Hi Jorge,
I like how you set up your chess club website… Good luck with attracting more players to your tournaments. I can’t wait to see exactly what your announcement will look like in Chess Life.

Hi Steve,

I submitted a similar TLA around this time last year and it looked pretty much like I wrote it above.

Hi ChessManiac,

How does StudentChess work. Do the students all play eachother online? I used to run unrated events at my club over uschesslive.org like that.
