Would like to get feedback on a tournament idea

You might consider 2 sections so you can go to a 4 round schedule.

You can’t reject feedback from experienced people who know far more than you do unless you first receive it.

How would you split the field into two? Not sure two sections makes sense for a Tournament of Champions type tournament.

Or using accelerated pairings.

Based on seeing similar events, and the information provided in this thread, I would estimate that only around 24 players or less would accept the “invitation” to the projected tournament. Many will not want to pay an extra $50 entry fee. The prize fund looks a little top heavy with no chance for a prize for the majority of the players, especially class players. Others will look at the round times and time between rounds and find them unacceptable. The people who play in one day Quads have a different objective than those who play in two+ day Grand Prix tournaments, and so will not like the format. There may even be a couple of people who will balk at playing after finding out who is directing the final event. Maybe they won’t like playing in June. This tournament will be a high commitment of time and money for out of town players. Players will find a number of reasons not to play, if they search hard enough.

A 15 minute break is not appealing if you are interested in serious chess. Neither is three rounds per day. In “prestigious” tournaments, the normal format is two rounds per day at most. Round times are set apart by 5 or 6 hours; if the tournament is FIDE rated, you bump into limits of the length of the playing day. As far as "prestige’ of the tournament, that is in the eye of the beholder. The initial idea in the opening post looks like the usual tournament, nothing special about the conditions. Since there are so many other tournaments to play in, the projected event is not that attractive.

Or deal with multiple perfect scores. Money is divisible.

If you want an event to be considered “prestigious”, don’t required three rounds in one day. Prestigious events have decent playing conditions, and three rounds in one day doesn’t qualify. The absence of a decent guaranteed break only exacerbates the problem.

I’d still like to hear Mr. Smith’s answer to my question upthread.

Alex Relyea

You’ll have to be more specific. He has ignored at least two of your questions upthread.

Well, I guess I’d like all of them answered. I don’t do this for my health. It is my (admittedly uninformed) contention that it is unlikely that 41 different people win 41 different tournaments at the same club.

Maybe Micah is busy making and sending in the TLA based on all of the suggestions he has been given, since the deadline for publishing it is approaching. He has no time to answer questions because he has to call hotels and other venues to get a tournament site, provide hotel information and discounts for the players, order tournament supplies, arrange for a TD, make up pdf files for flyers, update the club website with tournament details, order a championship trophy for this proposed prestigious event, and a hundred other details that go into making an event special.

Yes, there will likely be players who win multiple qualifiers.

So…how many qualifiers will there be (approximately)? It seems like you’re allergic to actually figuring that out. Yet, your assumption that you need five rounds, which leads to the scheduling difficulties, is based upon nothing more than a count of qualifying sections, not qualifiers. (And, of course, you’re also probably throwing in an unrealistic assumption about how many would attend).
