So, if you got Chess gifts for Christmas, what did you get?
Even though it wasn’t “for Christmas” and bought with my own money, I got an eNotate w/PDA. Yay!
And I got a massive Amazon gift card that shall be used in part to purchase Fritz 12. (As much as I would like to go USCF Sales, I’ve got the Amazon credit and F12 has been on my ‘to get’ list since it came out.) Correction and plug: Found the USCF Sales link on Amazon… Had to click “4 New” to find it. So there I am, and it’s worth it to me to pay a smidge more for it!)
Anyway, it was a good Christmas in terms of gifts, and good for my enjoyment of chess.
A family member got me a Chronos Blitz clock from USCF sales. Luckily, I was able to download a manual by Googling ‘Chronos’. I thought it strange that the clock didn’t come with one.
Got a tournament combo, as I’d been using my alma mater club’s boards for the past year 1/2. Picked out the colors/pieces/clock then walked away from the computer so someone else could buy it and it would be a “suprise”
Welcome to the Forums! (Officially-without-any-authority, with your first post. )
I’ve had my Chronos for over a decade now - used it again tonight. I find it odd you didn’t get a manual - maybe they aren’t being packaged with them now??? Though I remember it took me quite awhile to learn how to get mine working as I wanted it to even with the manual - so many modes! (And there are still modes on mine for Byo-Yomi Go that I’m still fuzzy on as I’ve never used them. )
I hope yours lasts as long as mine has, and you are still using it then!

DEEP Rybka 4. That gift saves me $100. But now I have to buy a replacement for my ancient 6 year old 1GB RAM computer to gain the DEEP benefit. This gift of Rybka 4 is going to cost me plenty

Actually, I didn’t get anything chess related this year. Lots of nice things, but not chess.
Well, not entirely true. My wife gave me $50 of ebook credit, and I bought Pandolfini’s Ultimate Guide to Chess. There’s a piece set I want as well. (Maybe that will be birthday? )
There’s a free version of Shredder, which you can try out and then buy the full version if you like it. I’ve been enjoying it, although my rating suffers from finger slips on the tiny screen.
For the Ipod I have Shredder, Chess Genius, Fritz, Caissa Chess and Mastersoft Chess and find that I use Shredder 98 percent of the time verses the others.
But try the free versions first. There are alot of chess programs for the Ipod.
A chess playing program - “Chess vs. the Axis of Evil.” Political; funny boards and pieces. LMAO. A very nice gift was a leather bound scorebook. Also received a DGT North American chess clock. A friend and benefactor of our club sent us a bunch of these clocks, too, to use in our tournaments and for the kids to use when they go to scholastic events. I also was given several gift cards to use at restaurants when I go on chess trips. I am grateful to all of my friends. Happy New Year!
I got “Kasparov-Karpov 1988-2009”, completing the entire Kasparov collection of “Great Predecessors” (5 volumes), and the four white books after that. I’m almost done with volume 4 of the My Great Predecessor series, the one on Fischer. Four down, six to go!
Four years ago I got a “tournament” kit, which consisted of a folding wooden tournament chess board, the “classic” wooden chess set, a deluxe HOS chessbag (all from “HOS: House of Staunten”), and a Chronos Touch Chess Clock from another web retailor.
Then a year or two ago (forgot exactly when), I got the USCF lifetime membership in the waining hours before the price of the lifetime membership jumped from $1000 to $1500. (And most certainly the best $1000 I ever spent.)
There is a bunch of chess software I’d like to get for my new computer, but nothing that can’t wait till next holiday season.
For Christmas, I got a big spiffy-looking bag that zips shut and can now become my “fill-full-of-stuff-to-bring-to-tournaments-or-chess-club” bag. It’s somewhere between an enormous purse and a briefcase. The color? Black, of course.
