OK. No more three-month memberships. No more tournament memberships. We have a two-month membership for $20 or a “correction fee” of $10 if someone isn’t a member. This is all explained here:
We had a young guy at a tournament who said he had bought USCF membership online with a credit card, but we couldn’t find his member record. He was a new member, so no prior USCF member number. The organizer went ahead and let him play, figuring we would pay the $10 correction fee. Cost of doing business. One out of over 100. No big deal.
But when I went to rate the tournament, I couldn’t figure out how to access that $10 correction fee. Once I had uploaded the rating files, this player’s name was blanked out, and the system absolutely insisted that I put in a member number. We did the $20 two-month so we could rate the event.
How is this “correction fee” feature supposed to work? Can it be accessed in real time, i.e., through the regular online rating system? Where is the user documentation for it? Can it really be accessed for people who have never been members before? If not, then someone needs to rewrite the web page I referenced above.
(Apologies in advance if the info is right there in plain sight.)
You could have created an ID number using the “Non-member $0” membership type, put this ID number into the rating report, and submitted it for validation. TD/A would have given you an error saying that the player was not a current USCF member, with a checkbox to allow you to pay the $10 correction fee. This is explained in Frequently Asked Questions for the USCF TD/Affiliate Support Area, Part 2 under the heading “I have a non-member in my tournament. How do I do a two-month adult membership?”.
The $ 20 two month is far better than the $10 onerous charge for at least then the player and the club gets some value for the expenditure. Not much, but some. It still has not in logical fashion been explained how it is mathematically possible that USCF loses money at $5
per month in the three month adult plan, but makes money in the just
over $3 per month average USCF actually nets after affiliate discounts with the
regular annual plan of $40.
