A few other odds and ends about today’s US men’s match I found interesting:
Nakamura shows now with an unofficial rating of 2786.7 after knocking off Sasikiran. So, at least unofficially, Nakamura is now the highest rated American ever (except for WCF Grand Master Stan Vaughan, of course ).
Too bad about Kamsky’s game. He looked like he was fine against Harikrishna right up to the end. Black’s 37th looked inaccurate to me, but as I am a fish, I don’t presume to know better than Kamsky. Black’s 38th, though, was just an error, I think. Interestingly, the first thing I thought of when I saw 38. … g4+ relayed was a concept that I believe comes from Dr. John Nunn: that a small mistake is often immediately followed by a bigger mistake.
The men’s tournament appears to be holding to form, more or less, through four rounds. The top four seeds (Russia, Armenia, Ukraine, Hungary) look like they are the only four teams with perfect match scores now. The US is in good position, but has some work to do to stay in line for a medal.
And a final note…from the Olympiad website comes this announcement:
Can we call this the Haring Rule?
(edited to remove now-irrelevant nitpick)
And there is a note about it on the slideshow on the home page, with a full report to follow.
round 5 pairings
open USA white vs Czech Republic
women black vs Vietnam
the women should have a 100-200 rating point advantage at each board
the men face an all GM team but will be rated about 50 points higher at each board depending on line up
A very good report (although late) about rounds 3 and 4, but why is it hidden under the story about Nakamura beating Fischer’s highest FIDE rating?
oops, I mean FIDE rating. (I wish there was only one rating.)
Are you saying the USA has 4 whites? I think it is or should be the higher ranked team by average has white on boards 1 & 4
The team that is designated as White gets that color on boards 1 and 3. It is also correct to speak of a team having White or Black, as the exact color distribution by board is implied in the team color assignment.
