Returning to Chess After Long Layoff

I am returning to chess after a very long layoff and plan to participate in a lot of correspondence chess. I actually have a few questions and am seeking advice from all members.

  1. I have been told that ECTool is the best for recording correspondence games. Does everyone agree or please make other suggestions.

  2. How does ECTool compare with Chessbase Light?

  3. I have downloaded ECTool but cannot register it. DOes anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your time and help.

I used ECTool 10 years ago when you still had to pay for it. It’s only problem is that it is near impossible to use the program for direct emailing. Because of this, someone got me to use Chess Pocket Tool. That one worked great, but alas when I just upgraded to a new laptop four weeks ago, I can’t find anywhere to download this latter program. So, I’m back to ECTool as the best available.

On his website, the author of ECTool has a name and password listed where anyone can register it for free. In fact I just went there and here is the information you need:

* USER NAME : FREEWARE VERSION
* PASSWORD : 108702118100

I have used ChessBase and I find it more complicated in making moves and so on.

So far, ECTool is the best I can find and download.

What I do is make my move, then hit the envelope icon to set up the email. I then copy the body of that email and paste it into the body of my reply email to my opponent. It’s easy that way. Of course I use the Tournament Wizard to set the section up with my opponents and their email addresses and all.

I also go to the Options tab in the header of the game area and click to have the date and time information included in the email. I also click to give a day off for the transmission.

Good Luck

Thanks Ron for the great info! I appreciate your time and insight.
