The Village Chess Shop

Has anyone here ever done business with The Village Chess Shop of New York City? (chess-shop.com)

I completed an online order for a chess board with them late on September 10 of this year. After an automatic acknowledgement the next day, they refuse to report anything about the order status. After several e-mail inquiries, I got a response (Sept 20) that they’d look into it, but they haven’t responded to further inquiries at all. My credit card was charged on the 11th, according to the statement.

Their site says they’re open 24 hours a day. Now, I know that these things can take time, and it’s not as if I were expecting fast service: I’d just like to know what, if anything has been done about the order. Everyone else that I’ve dealt with online for maybe the past ten years has provided more information than this. It’s not very smart business: I figured that if I liked this board, I might order a couple more. Not likely any more.

Seventeen days now with nothing but “we’ll look into it.” I’ll probably wait some more before I contact the Master Card people or the Chamber of Commerce. I will report back here as to how this is resolved, but until then, please heed this warning when shopping.

If they are looking into it, then it is likely that they are relying on their supplier to fulfill the order. By all means, light a fire by contacting your financial institution. I believe that Federal Trade Commission regulation requires them to notify you if your order cannot be fulfilled within 30 days, and to give you an out.

I see that they have a phone number. I would call them and ask to speak with the manager. I am confident that speaking with someone would help get a quick resolution.

Yeah … it’s just that during business hours I’m at work myself. I also figured that I might end up “on hold” for an hour at my own expense. But I’ll give that a try.

I would think it would always be important to call the business first, before posting something without having any facts?

Th Village Chess Shop survives on service, convenienc, value and the cordial hosting of (all levels of) game play, yea, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
