I checked my copy of the 6th Edition of the rulebook and it doesn’t seem to say exactly when it takes effect. I guess the assumption has to be that it became effective when it was published.
However, on the front page of the USCF website there is a document linked that shows the changes to the 5th Edition of the rulebook. That same document is linked elsewhere on the website too.
Would it be possible to get everyone on the same page using the same edition of the rulebook that is in effect, which I assume would now be the 6th Edition? If so can we also get rid of all the documents referring to the 5th Edition as they should be now considered outdated?
I can’t imagine I am the only person confused by this particular situation and it is not healthy for directors to be confused by this.
The confusion is understandable. However, in a sense, the sixth edition is a “silent update.” That is, the intent of the sixth edition was that it was exactly the same as the fifth edition with all the rules updates passed by the delegates through 2013. Just don’t look at 14H too carefully.
Well, I wish now that I hadn’t forked out $25 for the 6th edition, as I had the 5th updated with notes in the margins, and on the blank pages in the front and back of the book.
The 6th Ed paperback is a much better option when…in exasperation…you hand the rule book to the curmudgeonly player and tell him/her, “Show me in the rulebook where it says your claim should be valid.”
