Historical FIDE Ratings

I recently had occasion to come across this potentially very useful site and wanted to share:

mark-weeks.com/chess/ratings/

The files there do not claim to be perfect, but for those looking for ratings from 1970 - 2000 this could be very useful.

FIDE ratings files from 2001-2008 do not appear to be available on the FIDE website.

I found that they are - but they are not listed.

If you go to ratings.fide.com/download/jan09frl.zip gets the January 09 FIDE rating list.

If you use the same format and type it in, you can get lists for other periods. For example, ratings.fide.com/download/jan01frl.zip downloads the 2001 January FIDE rating list.

This works back to 2001.

Nice catch!

Could it be that earlier files might be there somewhere too, but that the filename formats might have changed due to Y2K?

That’s possible, but I notice that if one looks up an individual’s rating and then clicks the “click to view all previous periods” link, the historical rating data only goes back to 2001. That makes me think that 2001 is to FIDE’s rating pages as 1991 is to MSA.

Hence the first post in the thread! Gödel, Escher, Bach…the eternal golden braid. We’ve come full circle.

Thanks for the link. Anyone interested in a more advanced treatment of the subject might like…
